Coir yarn looks simple until the wrong twist arrives. Here is what actually differs between grades, and what to put in an enquiry.
Our coir yarn is two-ply: two strands of coir fibre twisted together. Within that construction, grades differ in twist, colour and cleanliness, and those three decide how the yarn behaves in use.
Twist controls strength and stiffness
Yarn is twisted soft, medium or hard, according to grade. A harder twist gives a firmer yarn that holds its shape; a softer twist is more pliable and easier to work by hand. Tell us what the yarn is for and we will suggest the twist that suits it.
The colour is natural
Coir yarn comes in natural golden, brown, grey or reddish-brown. Name the shade you need when you enquire.
What good yarn looks like
- Uniform thickness along its length
- An even twist
- Clean fibre with minimum impurities
- Moisture of 15% or less, and sand of 2% or less
What to specify when you enquire
Give us the twist, the colour, how you want it packed — hanks, bobbins or spools — and the volume. One yarn bundle weighs 8 to 9 kg, and a lorry carries up to 9 tons. If you are unsure which twist suits your use, describe what you are making and we will suggest a grade.
